Professional Teeth Whitening in Thornhill — Brighter Results, Faster

A whiter smile is one of the most immediate confidence boosts cosmetic dentistry can offer. At MiNa Family Dentistry in Thornhill, we offer professional teeth whitening that patients can count on for safe, fast, and noticeably brighter results. Whether you choose an in-office Zoom session or a custom take-home tray kit, Dr. Neda Kadivar and our team will help you find the approach that fits your schedule, your sensitivity level, and your smile goals.

Why Professional Teeth Whitening Outperforms Over-the-Counter Options

Walk down any pharmacy aisle and you will find whitening strips, toothpastes, and trays that promise dramatic results. The reality is more modest. Over-the-counter products use low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide — typically 3 to 10 percent — because they must be safe for unsupervised use on a wide range of patients. Professional whitening systems used in dental offices operate at 25 to 40 percent hydrogen peroxide concentration, which is why they achieve dramatically faster and more uniform results.

Custom-fitted protection is one of the key advantages: generic strips and trays often allow whitening gel to contact your gums, causing irritation. At MiNa Family Dentistry, take-home trays are made from precise impressions of your teeth, ensuring gel stays on enamel only. Supervised candidacy screening ensures you are not spending time and money on a treatment that will not address your specific staining type. And because we control the concentration, application time, and technique, your results are consistent from tooth to tooth — something strip-based products rarely achieve.

Types of Teeth Whitening Available at MiNa Family Dentistry

In-Office Zoom Whitening

Zoom whitening is the gold standard for patients who want the fastest possible results. In a single 45-minute appointment at our Thornhill office, the Zoom light-activated system can brighten your teeth by up to 8 shades. The process involves applying a protective barrier to your gums and lips, placing a high-concentration whitening gel on your teeth, activating it with the Zoom LED light in three 15-minute cycles, and finishing with a post-treatment fluoride gel to reduce sensitivity.

Our current promotional price for Zoom in-office whitening is $200 — a fraction of what many clinics charge for the same system. Results are visible immediately after you leave the chair.

Custom Take-Home Whitening Trays

For patients who prefer to whiten gradually or maintain their in-office results at home, we fabricate custom bleaching trays from impressions of your teeth. You receive professional-strength whitening gel to use for 30 to 60 minutes per day, or overnight if using a lower-concentration formula. Most patients see their desired result within one to two weeks.

Take-home trays also serve as long-term maintenance tools. After an in-office Zoom session, touch-up treatments with your custom trays extend your results significantly.

Over-the-Counter Strips

Over-the-counter strips are not something we recommend as a primary whitening treatment, but they are a reasonable supplement for very mild surface staining between professional appointments. We are happy to discuss whether they fit into your maintenance routine.

Whitening Candidacy: Will It Work for Your Teeth?

Teeth whitening works on extrinsic stains — discolouration that lives on or near the enamel surface. The most common causes are coffee, tea, and red wine; tobacco use; dark sauces, berries, and acidic foods; and general yellowing from aging.

Intrinsic stains originate inside the tooth structure itself. These include tetracycline antibiotic staining, fluorosis from excess fluoride during development, staining from old metal fillings, and trauma-related darkening of a single tooth. Zoom and professional bleaching systems are effective for extrinsic and mild intrinsic staining. Moderate to severe intrinsic discolouration — particularly tetracycline staining — may not respond adequately to bleaching. In those cases, porcelain veneers or dental crowns offer a more reliable path to the smile you want. Dr. Kadivar will assess your specific staining pattern during your consultation and tell you honestly which approach will give you the best outcome.

Managing Sensitivity During and After Whitening

Tooth sensitivity after whitening is common, temporary, and manageable. The hydrogen peroxide in whitening gel temporarily opens the pores in your enamel, allowing more temperature and touch sensation to reach the nerve. For most patients this fades within 24 to 48 hours.

At MiNa Family Dentistry we use a two-step sensitivity protocol: before treatment, a fluoride varnish or desensitizing gel application strengthens enamel and reduces sensitivity throughout the procedure; after treatment, a post-whitening potassium nitrate gel is applied to calm the nerve and accelerate recovery.

Patients with a history of sensitivity should let Dr. Kadivar know at their consultation. We may recommend a lower-concentration take-home system worn for shorter intervals rather than a full in-office session, or suggest using a sensitivity toothpaste for two weeks before your Zoom appointment.

How Long Do Whitening Results Last?

Professional whitening is not permanent, but with good habits results from a Zoom session typically last 1 to 3 years. Daily coffee or tea consumption causes significant staining within months without maintenance. Red wine and dark berries cause moderate staining over time. Smoking or tobacco use leads to rapid re-staining. Regular dental hygiene visits and periodic touch-up treatments with custom trays can extend results considerably.

The best strategy for long-lasting results is a combination approach: Zoom in-office for your initial dramatic improvement, followed by custom take-home trays used for a few nights every 3 to 6 months as maintenance.

FactorImpact on Whitening Longevity
Daily coffee or tea consumptionSignificant staining within months without maintenance
Red wine and dark berriesModerate staining over time
Smoking or tobacco useRapid re-staining; whitening strongly discouraged without quitting
Regular dental hygiene visitsProlongs results through professional polishing
Touch-up trays used periodicallyCan extend results to 3+ years
Genetics and natural enamel porosityVaries; some patients re-stain faster than others

An Important Note: Whitening and Existing Restorations

Whitening gel only works on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, porcelain fillings, and composite bonding will not change colour during whitening treatment. If your front teeth include any of these restorations, whitening the surrounding natural teeth can create a visible colour mismatch.

If you are planning to get new restorations soon, whiten your teeth first and allow the shade to stabilize (usually 2 weeks), then have your restorations matched to your new, brighter tooth colour. If you already have existing restorations, discuss the colour situation with Dr. Kadivar before whitening. We can advise on whether the contrast will be noticeable and whether replacing the restorations as part of a broader smile makeover might be the better plan.

Foods and Habits That Stain Teeth

The first 48 hours after whitening treatment are critical. The pores in your enamel remain more open during this window, making teeth especially susceptible to re-staining. Avoid coffee, tea, and cola; red wine and grape juice; tomato sauce, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar; berries and deeply pigmented fruits; curry and other heavily spiced foods; and tobacco products.

After the initial 48-hour window, you do not need to avoid these foods permanently, but moderating your intake and rinsing with water after consuming staining foods and drinks will extend your results meaningfully.
