Pediatric Dentist Thornhill — Child-Friendly Dental Care for Every Age at MiNa Family Dentistry
Gentle, child-friendly dental care in Thornhill — building confident, comfortable dental experiences for kids from their very first visit through their teenage years.

Finding a dentist who is genuinely wonderful with children makes all the difference. At MiNa Family Dentistry, Dr. Neda Kadivar has spent more than 20 years building confident, comfortable dental experiences for kids — from infants visiting for the very first time to teenagers managing their orthodontic care. As a family dental practice serving Thornhill and the surrounding area, we see patients of every age under one roof.
MiNa Family Dentistry is a general and family dental practice, not a dedicated pediatric dental specialist office. What we are is a practice where children are genuinely prioritized, where Dr. Kadivar's decades of experience with young patients means your child will be treated with patience, warmth, and a technique designed to build trust rather than fear.
When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends that every child have their first dental visit within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. Most parents are surprised by this recommendation, but there is good reason behind it.
Baby teeth are susceptible to decay from the moment they appear. Early childhood caries (tooth decay in infants and toddlers) is one of the most common preventable childhood diseases in Canada. It can progress rapidly in young children, affecting speech development, nutrition, and the proper spacing of adult teeth that have not yet erupted.
The first dental visit is primarily about education, prevention, and relationship-building. It sets the tone for a lifetime of positive dental experiences. Families who start early typically raise children who are at ease at the dentist and who maintain better oral health as they grow.
What to Expect at Your Child's First Dental Visit
Your child's first appointment at MiNa Family Dentistry is designed to be entirely positive. Dr. Kadivar and our team will meet you and your child in a relaxed, unhurried setting. Young children often love the dental chair — it goes up and down, and it is different from anything they have seen before. We let them experience this at their own pace.
For very young patients, the exam is gentle and playful. Dr. Kadivar uses a small mirror and a light to look at the emerging teeth, checking for any early signs of decay, developmental concerns, or positioning issues. The first visit is just as much for parents as it is for the child. Dr. Kadivar reviews age-appropriate brushing techniques, discusses diet and feeding habits (including the effects of bottle use at night and frequent juice or sugary drinks), and answers all your questions about fluoride, teething, thumb-sucking, and when to expect adult teeth.
For children with erupted teeth, we may apply a fluoride varnish to protect the enamel. This is quick, painless, and highly effective.
Making Children Comfortable at the Dentist
Dr. Kadivar uses several child-tested approaches to ensure dental visits are not stressful.
Before any step in the appointment, we describe what will happen in simple language, show the instrument or tool, and then gently perform the action — the tell-show-do technique. No surprises. We never rush a child. If a child needs to sit up, look at the instrument, or just take a breath, we stop and give them that time. A visit where the child feels in control is a visit they will remember positively.
We use language that makes sense to children. The suction tool is the tooth vacuum. The polishing paste is tooth shampoo. Making the unfamiliar familiar reduces fear before it starts. We celebrate every step your child takes, no matter how small. For young children, we encourage a parent to stay close or sit with the child during the appointment.
What Dental Care Does a Child Need at Each Stage?
Children's dental needs change as they grow. Here is an age-by-age overview of what to expect.
| Age | Key Dental Milestones | What We Recommend |
|---|---|---|
| 0–12 months | First tooth erupts, typically between 4–10 months | First dental visit by age 1; gum wipes before teeth appear |
| 1–3 years | Baby teeth continue erupting; all 20 primary teeth by age 3 | Brush with a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste; establish regular dental visits |
| 4–6 years | Baby teeth stable; first permanent molars beginning to form under the surface | Reinforce flossing; professional cleanings; cavity monitoring |
| 6–8 years | First permanent molars erupt; front baby teeth loosen | Sealants on first permanent molars; cavity treatment for baby teeth if needed |
| 9–12 years | Second premolars and canines emerge; orthodontic concerns often become apparent | Sealants on second molars; orthodontic assessment; sports mouthguards |
| 13–17 years | Second permanent molars erupt; wisdom tooth development begins | Continued sealants; orthodontics if indicated; wisdom tooth monitoring |
Common Children's Dental Issues We Treat at MiNa
Early Childhood Decay
Cavities in baby teeth are more common than most parents realize. They develop quickly in young children and, if left untreated, can become painful, spread to neighboring teeth, and require more involved treatment. At MiNa, we catch early decay at routine exams and treat it with the gentlest approach appropriate for the child's age.
Baby teeth matter. Even though they will eventually fall out, they hold space for adult teeth and play a critical role in chewing, speaking, and facial development. A baby tooth lost too early to decay can cause the permanent tooth to come in crooked or crowded.
Thumb-Sucking and Pacifier Habits
Non-nutritive sucking habits are normal for infants and young toddlers. Most children stop on their own. However, prolonged thumb-sucking or pacifier use beyond age 3 to 4 can affect the development of the bite and the shape of the palate. Dr. Kadivar can assess the impact at any age and discuss strategies for breaking the habit gently if needed.
Early Orthodontic Concerns
Not every child will need braces, but early assessment matters. Signs that orthodontic intervention may be beneficial include crowding, crossbite, significant overbite or underbite, and difficulty closing the mouth comfortably. We will flag any concerns during routine exams and discuss timing for any recommended treatment.
For children who do need orthodontic treatment as they get older, MiNa Family Dentistry offers Invisalign for appropriate adolescent cases.
Dental Trauma
Children are active, and accidents happen. Chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, and lacerations to the lips or gums are not uncommon. If your child experiences dental trauma, call us immediately. A tooth knocked out within an hour has a good chance of being reimplanted if treated promptly. We provide same-day emergency appointments for dental injuries.
Sports Mouthguards for Children
Any child who plays contact sports, hockey, football, basketball, or martial arts should be wearing a mouthguard. A custom-fitted mouthguard from MiNa Family Dentistry provides significantly better protection and comfort than a store-bought boil-and-bite option. It fits precisely, stays in place, and does not interfere with breathing during activity.
We can make a custom mouthguard for children of school age and up. Ask about this at your child's next appointment.
The Canadian Dental Care Plan and Children's Coverage
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) provides dental coverage for eligible Canadian residents. Children under 18 are included in the plan, and the covered services include exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants, and fillings for eligible families. Coverage is income-tested.
Our administrative team will verify your child's eligibility and help you understand what is covered before your appointment. We want cost to be as small a barrier as possible to getting your child the care they need.
When Would MiNa Refer to a Pediatric Dental Specialist?
MiNa Family Dentistry handles the vast majority of children's dental care in-house. However, there are situations where referral to a certified pediatric dental specialist is the right decision for the child.
Dr. Kadivar will always discuss her reasoning with you if a referral is appropriate and will help coordinate the transition to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
- Very young children (typically under age 3 to 4) who require extensive treatment under general anaesthesia
- Children with significant special needs who require a highly specialized environment and team
- Rare developmental abnormalities that require specialist management
